Possible Network Problems

Top

On my XP notebook, the client cannot connect to the server. What can be the reason?

If everything is installed correctly, the reason might be that there is no network running on the computer. This can happen, if there is no network cable plugged in and the computer is not connected to any WLAN. In this case the network card is switched off, the computer has no IP address at all and communication via named pipes is impossible.

If you want to check, whether this is the reason for not being able to connect, open a command prompt and type ipconfig, then hit return. If the output says something like there is no media connected, media sensing has disabled the network adapter.

There are multiple ways to fix the problem:

If there is a WLAN that your computer can connect to, switch on the WLAN adapter.
Disable media sensing. This is described e.g. in the Microsoft knowledge base article id 239924.
Install the loopback adapter on your system. This is described e.g. in the Microsoft knowledge base article id 236869.
